Our School

The instructional programs at Pocahontas Woods have been set up to accommodate most any individuals time or seasonal restraints, whether that be several hours a week, night or day as part of the open shop program to the fully accredited degree program or those in between, such as the journeyman or apprentice programs.

All of our course regimens begin at the same point, with an introduction to the safe and effective use of the major stationary machines. The equipment in our shop is capable of producing museum quality pieces, once the craftsman has mastered their safe operation. As projects progress we continue this formal instruction in all tools and equipment.

Pocahontas Woods offers a variety of instructional programs, but with an underlying fundamental philosophy. We emphasize accomplishments that are both realistic and challenging, forgoing the mundane endeavors one often finds in other programs.  The  subsequent self confidence that emerges from our DESIGN-BUILD-LEARN concept drives the self motivation of our students to not simply meet a criteria of craftsmanship, but to master it.

The facility at Pocahontas Woods does limit us to only several students at a time. By purposely not setting up specific start/stop dates or hours of operation we end up with students at  varying levels of competence, working on projects of differing levels of complexity. The result is an interaction rather than a competition which enhances the experience, much like a one room schoolhouse. We will also help each candidate with grant opportunities, and fee programs.
